5 Tips for Photography Group Shoots
Back in June of 2019, I went on a little trip with some sweet creative friends of mine to Utah. Not a workshop, but just a trip we planned together to explore & do some amazing shoots. BUT, I did learn a lot of things that I think can be applied to workshop environments.
1. Keep your groups small. There were 5 of us girls total. Be aware that everyone is shooting with different gear & on different focal lengths. I was shooting on a 50mm the entire trip & the rest of the squad on 35mm. This made shooting a little more challenging for me because I was having to step further back to get the shots the girls were getting. My shots turned out awesome; I just had to innovate to get them.
2. Don’t be afraid to speak up. Even a handful of people can be a lot for a photo shoot. If you want to get a shot or have an idea, say something. I really hesitated doing this the first couple of shoots we had because I didn’t want to upset anybody or get in someone’s way. I just wanted to be conscious of sharing creative space. Be kind about it & quick - so you don’t miss a beat.
3. Don’t worry about what other people think about your creative ideas. I’m serious. Even if it’s crazy (but safe, lol), even it if goes again the rules, or even if it’s odd - try it. You can decided later if you really dig it, even if no one else does.
4. Don’t be afraid to get vulnerable. We had so many conversations on our several hour drives about life & photography. Most of us were dealing with the same stuff, regardless of experience level. It was so refreshing to be able to relate & to also share wisdom from my experiences.
5. Have fun! Sure, you are there to learn & grown. But more than anything, you are there to have a blast doing what you love. The thing I value the most from this trip isn’t the work I get to add to my portfolio; it’s the time I got to spend with my girls. Road-tripping, singing in the car, talking, laughing, eating, & making memories.
