What to Wear to Your Session

I’ve got your back, friend.

Hey there! I know picking out the “perfect” outfit or outfits for your session can feel a little overwhelming. Sometimes you just need a place to start & I’m here to help.

The Most Important Thing

First off, this not a set of rules. Nothing on this page is a “have to.” The most important thing to me - is that you feel like YOU.

We all love Pinterest boards & a good trend, but that doesn’t have to be the basis for your look. Sometimes your style might not be what is popular or “recommended.” Remember that these photos are for YOU to enjoy & hold dear; not everyone else.

Check Your Closet Before You Start Shopping

You know - it’s pretty possible that you might not even need to buy anything new, but have something you already love hanging in your closet.

The Suggetions

My suggestions are complimentary colors rather than matching. Don’t be afraid to be tastefully funky if you decide to go with a print/pattern. Texture is a fun thing to play with too! Certain types of fabrics can break up your outfits.

Your outfit(s) can be casual or dressy. Maybe you’d prefer your favorite ripped jeans and a t-shirt. Maybe you’d prefer something more formal. Maybe you’d like to meet somewhere in the middle.

The photos above are just a few to fill some space, but you can check out my blog & IG to see what other clients have chosen to wear for their sessions!

Keep It Simple

Going with one outfit that you really love makes adventuring easier & takes the stress out of changing, but I recommend no more than two. If you have a session that is an hour or less, you might consider just one outfit.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Do I feel like my best self in it?
Does it showcase my personality?
Does it compliment the things I love the most about myself?
Does it avoid accentuating the things I don't love the most about myself?
Is it comfortable?
Can I move around in it without worry?
Does it work with the location?
Does it work with the season?

Let’s Talk Shoes

If you have a woodsy/outdoorsy session, comfy shoes are a must. Think dirt, rocks, poison oak/ivy. Your shoes can still be stylish of course, but something you can walk/hike in with ease. I've had a few folks try to switch out shoes between shots, but it occupies time & interrupts the flow of adventure! I want to document everything, even as you walk/hike from spot to spot. If you are doing something downtown or indoors, you have a bit more freedom to wear whatever shoes you want.

Props & Accessories

Got a hat you like to wear? Favorite jewelry? Heirloom? Jacket? Guitar? Skateboard? Jeep? Muscle car? Motorcycle? Cozy blanket? Airstream? Your fur babies? Find a way to incorporate it if really means something to you!

Hair & Makeup

Keep it as true-to-you as possible. If you decide to have your makeup done professionally, I would make sure you do a trial run before your session.

Changing On-Location

If you need a way to change into your outfits, I’ll bring my pop-up changing tent with me!

When in Doubt, Bring Options

Maybe you’ve narrowed down your choices, but just can’t see to decide. Just throw your clothes in the car & we can decide on-location.

Other Things to Bring

Some other things that might be helpful to bring are:

water, snacks, bug spray, sunscreen, body glide (for chaffing), deodorant, hair ties, other layers of clothing (depending on season), a mini first aid kit (includes so many things if you were to need them), & a cute blanket (for laying on, sitting on, & wrapping up in), a clear bubble umbrella (or two) in the case of rain, a towel (for sweat or if you got wet from a swim/rain), & a change of clothes for the ride home.

Also, put all keys, cell phones, & other things you might stuff in your pockets in a bag to keep with you so that they don’t end up in your photos.

Last Thoughts

When in doubt, always go back to the very first paragraph of this page. That matters the most.

XO, Dakota
